Running Our Own Race: What Entrepreneurs Share with Olympic Athletes
Do you have Olympic aspirations? Most of us have dreamed of being an Olympian at some point, though few of us will ever compete at that level. However, small business owners have more in common with those superhuman athletes than we might realize.
The Summer Olympics. For the last week, I have been captivated by the superhuman feats the Olympians performed in Paris. From our gymnastic Golden Girls to Katie Ledecky’s historic wins, Gabby Thomas’s incredible gold medal run, and even Snoop and Martha at dressage, there has rarely been a dull moment.
As I watched the games, I started thinking about the parallels between Olympians and small business owners. While you’ll never see me on a balance beam or on a platform diving board (you’re welcome), we mere mortal entrepreneurs share quite a bit in common with those incredible, seemingly superhuman Olympians.
Different Tracks, Similar Skills
Beating the Odds
Olympians: Only 1 in 500,000 people make it to the Olympics.
Entrepreneurs: Only 1 in every 2 small businesses started will make it to year three. While our odds are WAY better than the Olympians, we can increase them even more by being prepared and persistent.
Dedication and Commitment
Olympians: They train for years to reach the pinnacle of their careers.
Entrepreneurs: We pour significant time and effort into launching and growing our businesses.
Resilience
Olympians: Setbacks are part of the journey, and they learn to persevere through failures and challenges.
Entrepreneurs: We turn our experiences into learning opportunities and keep moving forward.
Teamwork
Olympians: They rely on coaches, teammates, and support systems. In Tokyo, the athletes were isolated from their support systems, and many struggled as a result.
Entrepreneurs: We benefit from our teams, coaches, mentors, and networks. A strong support system is critical for our success.
Mental Tenacity
Olympians: Attitude is everything, especially in the face of adversity. A strong and healthy mindset keeps them motivated and focused. Simone Biles is a fierce and beautiful example of the importance of mental health.
Entrepreneurs: Burnout is a very real threat for small business owners. Mental tenacity and health play crucial roles in the success of our ventures.
Adaptability
Olympians: They constantly adjust their strategies based on competition and conditions to give them the edge.
Entrepreneurs: Change is constant in business, and we must be adaptable to stay competitive.
Enjoy the Race
These shared qualities show that the journey to success, whether in sports or business, is marked by hard work, perseverance, and the ability to overcome challenges. So, while you might not see me flipping through the air anytime soon (again, you’re welcome), know that in spirit, we entrepreneurs are running our own race every single day. Put on your own anthem and enjoy your race.
